3 WOOD Floor Options: Choosing the Right Finish for Your Hardwood Floors.

If you're planning to get your hardwood flooring installed or refinished, choosing the right finish for it is no less than an ordeal. With so many options available in the market today, picking the right one that suits your requirements can get confusing. As someone who has specialized in this industry for years, Iā€™d like to take a moment to explain the three types of finishes for your hardwood floors that I prefer using, and why. So sit back, relax, and let me walk you through the world of Oil-Based Polyurethanes, Acid-Cured Oil-Based Urethanes (Swedish finish), and Water-Based Urethanes.

Oil-Based Polyurethane finishes are an inexpensive option and are somewhere in the middle of the durability chart. They are perfect for those who want a budget-friendly option that wouldn't burn a hole in their pocket. However, they are prone to yellowing quite quickly and do not hold up very well to scratches. Additionally, they produce an odor with very high VOCs, which can cause harm to the environment and your family's health. Thus, I recommend this finish only to those who do not require a long-lasting hardwood floor finish.

The Swedish Finishes (also known as Conversion Varnish or Acid Cure) are another popular option for hardwood floor finishes. They have excellent durability and are cost-effective for high-end finishes. These finishes are extremely wear-resistant, scratch-resistant, and easy to clean. However, they also yellow and produce an intense odor while being applied, which can be a huge turn-off. Thus, I recommend this finish to those who want to choose a cost-effective yet durable finish for their hardwood flooring project.

Water-Based Urethanes are in a league of their own and are by far the most versatile options available today. They come in a wide variety of durability, ranging from builders-grade to high-end commercial-grade like 'Traffic HD,' and everything in between. Mid-grade water-based urethanes are very wear-resistant, scratch-resistant, non-yellowing, and low in odor. However, they are less durable than the Swedish finish. The high-end water-based urethanes like 'Bona Traffic HD' are incredibly durable, scratch-resistant, non-yellowing, and have a very low odor. However, they can be more expensive than the other options.

Choosing the right finish for your hardwood flooring project requires you to consider your desire, use, and expectancy. You'll want to select a finish that suits your budget, durability requirements, and overall project goals. If you're looking for a budget-friendly option to get things done quickly, Oil-Based Polyurethane finishes are an excellent choice. On the other hand, if you're looking for something more durable without breaking the bank, Swedish Finishes are suitable. However, if you want a versatile option that caters to a wide range of needs, Water-Based Urethanes are your best bet. Regardless of what option you decide to go for, always make sure it caters to your requirements and strengthens the longevity of your hardwood floors.
